If you worked somewhere fewer than three months, you may want to omit that position from your resume. More than six months, though, and you need to list it.

Every resume needs a cover letter (though you’ll hear arguments to the contrary). This brief letter offers you a chance to introduce yourself to busy executives. Use the six Cs of strong communication: conversational, concise, clear, centered, creative and complete. Conversational is not casual or formal; it’s straightforward with a relaxed tone.

Write clearly without jargon or corporate speak. Cut out extra words or rephrase to make it more concise; e.g., substitute routinely for on a regular basis. Use positive words to reflect your self-confidence, interest and professionalism. And double check that you’ve included everything.

Proofread, go for a walk, proofread again. Typos seem to jump off the page when you take a break. Proofread a hard copy—we catch more mistakes off screen and on paper. Even if you’re filing your cover letter and resume online, proof a hard copy.

Print on high quality letterhead. If you don’t have letterhead, use high quality resume paper with matching envelopes. Be sure to list your contact information under your signature.

Welcome to the ever changing world where the job market deteriorates before you know it and recovers when you are still fearful of job losses. Change is a constant today. Recently, one of my friends has fallen victim to the ugly monster called Mr. Retrenchment. But I am amazed at how fast he got back on his feet and prepare for the next challenge ahead. Get support. Retrenchment is usually carried out swift and fast, so much so that after the initial shock, you will feel angry and despair. What’s next? Move on and surround yourself with loved ones. It is tempting to withdraw from people and stop socializing but make sure you don’t do that. Stay in close contact with supportive loved ones who will shower you with care and encouragement. They are your source of support and strength in difficult times.

Don’t take it personal. Retrenchment is part and parcel of any economic downturn. It happened in the past and will happen in the future. So, don’t take it personally. Remember, it is the job that axed, not you. As long as you have the relevant experience, qualifications and skill-sets, you will find work in time to come.

Don’t expect the company where you are applying a job to find the right fit for you. Make sure your qualified for the job, and that it is right for you. They need a specific job to be filled, sending them a random application will not help anything. It is pretty normal for employers to question whether or not the applicant even read the job description, and that’s a huge problem. 

5: The job is taken

In many instances, you will not get a call back because the position is already filled. There is really nothing you can do about this, except continue searching for your next job.
